Lake Ashi (芦ノ湖, Ashinoko) is a scenic lake in the Hakone area, renowned for its stunning views of Mount Fuji and its serene atmosphere. While technically not in Atami, it's a popular day trip destination from Atami. Surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills, the lake offers a variety of activities, from boat cruises to hiking trails. It's a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Lake Ashi was formed in the caldera of Mount Hakone following a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. Throughout history, the lake has been a significant transportation route and a source of water for the surrounding areas. Today, it's a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors who come to admire its natural beauty and enjoy its recreational opportunities. The lake is also known for its association with the Hakone Shrine, which is located on its shores. A popular activity on Lake Ashi is taking a cruise on one of the sightseeing boats, which offer stunning views of Mount Fuji and the surrounding landscape. You can also explore the lake by renting a rowboat or paddleboat. Hiking trails wind around the lake, providing opportunities for scenic walks and breathtaking views. The Hakone Shrine, located on the shores of the lake, is also a must-visit. While Lake Ashi doesn't have a unique culinary tradition of its own, the Hakone area is known for its black eggs (kuro-tamago), which are hard-boiled eggs cooked in the volcanic hot springs of Owakudani. These eggs are said to add years to your life!
Transportation
From Atami Station, take the JR Tokaido Line to Odawara Station. From Odawara Station, take the Hakone Tozan Railway to Hakone-Yumoto Station. From Hakone-Yumoto Station, take a Hakone Tozan Bus to Lake Ashi (Motohakone-ko or Hakone-machi-ko bus stop). The bus ride takes approximately 40-60 minutes.
